healthy cheesy dorito like flavoured popcorn recipe

Everyone loves popcorn

If there is one thing that goes hand in hand with watching (3D) movies, it is the consumption of popcorn! Kids love it, adults love it, we all love it, don’t we? But pre-packaged and microwave ready varieties are often drenched in butter, salt or even worse, artificially flavored stuff immitating the butter flavour.

This is completely unneccesary, as popcorn in itself is not unhealthy and it is very easy to create a healthy version of flavoured popcorn, which is much better to give to your children (or to yourself) and it is also very much fun to do.

Healthy cheesy dorito like flavoured popcorn recipe

We will share one of our personal favorite recipes. It is a popcorn variety with a cheesy, Dorito’s like, flavour. However, there is actually no real cheese used. This recipe uses Nutritional Yeast. It has this cheesy flavor and comes in a powdery/ground form, so perfect to sprinkle on popcorn. This product is considered a superfood as it contains a lot of healthy nutrients, including vitamines and plenty of amino acids. We further recommend using organic spices, as they do not contain any traces of chemicals and pesticides.

This recipe makes 6-8 cups of popcorn.

Ingredients

1/2 cup of unpopped popcorn kernels
2-3 tablespoon Nutritional Yeast
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon paprika powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
1-2 teaspoon salt (as you prefer). Recommended to use sea salt.
2 tablespoons coconut oil, or another oil which is high heat resistant, like sunflower oil (not olive oil).

Instructions

Combine all spices in a seperate bowl and set aside. Heat up a pot on high heat. Add 2 tablespoons of coconot oil, let melt and add one table spoon of the kernels. Put lid on pot and shake pot regularly. When the first kernels start to pop, the pan has the right temperature. Turn down the heat to medium to maintain the same temperature and add the rest of the kernels. With the lid on the pot, shake the pan very often to prevent the popcorn from burning. When the time between pops becomes more than 2 or 3 seconds, it is time to take the pot off the stove.Put the popcorn in a big bowl and sprinkle the spices on, toss to coat.
